Natural Resource Inventory (NRI)
In 2005, the Montclair Environmental Commission retained the services of Amy S. Greene Environmental Consultants, Inc. to prepare a Natural Resource Inventory for Montclair. The Commission obtained a grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to fund the Inventory. This study identifies our natural resources such as soils, streams, geology, hydrology, wetlands, open space and more found within the Township. The NRI is a written document describing the natural resources of our Township and includes a number of maps to make it easy to locate the various natural features found here.
The Planning Board can now utilize the findings of the NRI when deliberating any Land-Use decisions. The next phase of this project will be to develop this information in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) format to allow the Township and the Commission to perform mapping and data analysis for issues of environmental concern that may arise in our community.

Lawn Care Without Toxic Chemicals For Homeowners
The environment really begins with you and your yard. The Montclair Environmental Commission recommends that residents to learn how to maintain healthy lawns without use of toxic chemicals for greater protection to all, especially children, pets and birds.
Waste Reduction and Recycling
Recycling provides both environmental and economic benefits for the town. Recycling conserves resouces, reduces pollution and saves energy. In addition, it provides an economic benefit in that rather than paying for recyclable materials to be disposed, the town earns money for recycled materials. The Department of Public Works provides detailed information regarding recycling in Montclair.
